Penetration Testing

An indispensable aspect of securing your business

What is a penetration test?

Businesses balance between two often opposing needs; one is the need to protect their business from data theft and other cyber attacks, the other is the need to facilitate uninterrupted business operations. The gap between the two is where cyber security vulnerabilities exist. Moreover, miscalculated risk assessments, simple misconfigurations, and vulnerable technology can all widen that gap.

This can best be understood by comparing the way cyber security functions to the operation of a filter. While more restrictive filters are more effective at removing smaller particles, they also tend to act as choke that forces the system to work harder – making it less efficient and more expensive to operate. Consequently, this often leads to the use filters that are much less restrictive than optimal in safeguarding the system.

Ideally, we aim for an optimum balance that maximizes the efficiency of filters while minimizing their toll on the system as a whole. Penetration tests play a significant role in optimizing this balance. By analyzing the gap and identifying instances where a “tighter filter” can be used without adversely effecting business operations, penetration tests are a necessary, efficiency maximizing part of securing your business.

Whether a penetration test is performed as part of a roll out for a new technology platform, or as part of a periodic security assessment, frequent testing is an indispensable aspect of securing your business. As an executive, penetration testing is one of the best tools you have to verify the efficacy of your existing cyber security mechanisms and protocols. It is also a crucial part of deploying any new technology or platform while keeping them secure throughout their lifecycle with periodic testing.

As your business evolves and adapts to changes in the world around it, it is vitally important to retest your cyber security frequently.

With that in mind, when was the last time you tested your cyber security?
